Sustainable Fairytale Costume

What is the Sustainable Fashion Show and why did I decide to participate?

The Sustainable Fashion Society hosts a fashion show every year where students will design a look (or several) made of recycled and sustainable materials.

After learning to sew a garment for the first time two years ago, I had been itching to do another garment project. I had watched the student fashion show before and had always thought it would be fun to design something for it. With it being my senior year I realized I would probably never get this opportunity again, so I decided to sign up.

“Swan-Geese” Story and Character Design

This year’s theme is fairytales, so I decided to pick one that I grew up with: гуси-лебеди or “Swan-Geese.”

There are a lot of interesting characters in this story: a river of milk, a “Pechka” (traditional heating stove), an apple tree, babayaga. I drew concepts for the apple tree that you can see below, however I decided to go with the characters the story gets its title from, the evil “Swan-Geese,” because I liked the idea of trying to amalgamate the flock into one character/being.

Early Concepts

In the early stages, I played with layering as a visual way of representing the multiple birds. I toyed with whether I wanted the person to be a bird or more of a being that represents them. The more I toyed the more I leaned towards the latter, as I could play with the form more.
